Ways To Reconnect With Nature

Updated: Apr 27, 2020

It’s easy to let the quarantine blues get the best of you when you feel like you’re trapped indoors. In the midst of all of this craziness it’s important to try to keep our connections with nature strong to keep up morale. Nature has a big effect on our mood, not getting outside can magnify the feelings of sadness and isolation you may be feeling (Hari, 2018). With stay at home orders closing down all non-essential businesses, you may be having a hard time figuring out how to enjoy the outdoors. Walks around the neighborhood can get monotonous really quickly.

Take your workout outside

There’s other ways to stay active outside that aren’t taking a walk. You can find hundreds, if not thousands,  of free workout videos on Youtube. Just look up your favorite kind of workout, whether that’s yoga, circuits or pilates, you can find anything. Take your laptop or phone outside and enjoy the sun while you burn some calories. This is a great way to kill two birds with one stone, working out is a great way to boost your mood too.

Picnic

Sometimes you just need to switch up your regular routine. Pack yourself and your family a fun meal. Take a blanket outside and find a comfy spot to enjoy a delicious lunch. Put together a calming playlist and bring a bluetooth speaker outside with you.

A nature walk (different than a regular walk)

Instead of walking down the street try a walk in the woods behind your house. Don’t go too deep into the woods, stick to a part close to home. Try leaving your phone at home to give yourself a chance to really connect with nature. You might find that you are seeing your surroundings in a new way. Take this time to notice all the little details of your everyday surroundings.

Chalk Art

Create some bright and colorful art in your driveway to cheer up your neighborhood. Remember, we are all going through a pandemic together, everyone could use some cheering up. A bright, colorful, positive message can go a long way in making someone’s day. If the whole neighborhood gets involved your daily walks would be a lot more interesting. The next time it rains you will have a brand new canvas.

Work on your gardening skills

If you think about it, there is no better time to be in quarantine. If this were to happen during the winter you would really be stuck indoors. However, as the old saying goes, April showers bring May flowers. Most hardware stores are still open and sell gardening supplies. If you need to go pick up gardening supplies make sure you put your mask and gloves on first and practice social distancing.
